Proactive Deterrence
Each spring and summer Newport Beach harbor is invaded by bull (adult male) California sea lions, attracted by the ample food supply and convenient haul out spots- docks and boats. While these native wild animals are a pleasure to watch, stained fiberglass, crushed stanchions, even broken docks and sunken vessels are becoming the norm. Unless these animals are encouraged to seek more appropriate haul out spots outside the harbor, public sentiment may turn against them. Local authorities are trying to mitigate the problem, with reactive efforts to break up groups of territorial barking animals. The true solution to limiting property damage and ensuring the health of our local wildlife is proactive deterrence.
